Panamint Dunes

Last week I went camping/hiking at the Panamint Dunes in Death Valley National Park. Here's a Google Map of the location. The dunes are centered in the map. The Natl. Park Service has an excellent map of death valley. The link is at the top of the right column. About 4.5 miles east of Panamint Springs, a graded somewhat and unsigned road extends for about 6 miles north from highway 190. At the end, there's a flat area for use as a parking lot or campground. Backcountry camping rules apply th

Well, it's back Shady Gardener, seemingly about as sweet a young thing as ever came down the pike, has reached out from her blog http://yardisgreen.blogspot.com/ and has nailed the meme to me, where you are supposed to publish eight things about yourself on your own blog. ???Who Killed Chester Pray? A Death Valley Mystery??? Book Review

Filmmaker and archeologist Nicholas Clapp reconstructs the troubled life and mysterious demise of gold-prospector Chester Pray, who was found dead at his claim in California??s aptly named Death Valley in June of 1913. His claim was potentially rich, some of his business associates and investors in the Monte Crisco mine were distinctly shady, and Chester himself, although well-liked and hard-working, was not a poster-child for good mental health. It can be fairly argued that those men who willin

Day 31 -- Sept 19th -- Baker, CA to Bishop, CA via Death Valley NP

279 Miles 6 hours on the bike What a day -- Where to start with this one?? As I thought yesterday this day proved to be the toughest of my journey thus far.? There are two things I will say to start off the post -- Death Valley is definitely appropriately named and I am really glad I was riding a motorcycle and not a bicycle as I passed several of them in the middle of the park today but I really would have liked to have had a car for a good portion of my crossing of this park -- So getting

Days 49-50 - Death Valley Days

We arrived in Death Valley at a propitious time for the lithospherically curious. Daytime highs had just dropped from the one-teens a few days before to the upper 90s. Associated with the cool front was a freak summertime storm that passed through the night before. It dropped a whopping six-tenths of one inch of rain-- 63/100 of an inch, to be precise. It doesn??t sound like a lot but in a place where the mean annual rainfall is just over two inches, you can do the math and see that they receive

More Charles Manson-related bodies?

Forensic investigators traveled to one of the Manson Family hide-outs in Death Valley National Park to explore old rumors of other victims that may have been buried there in the late 1960s. According to the new research described in an Associated Press article, there "are two likely clandestine grave sites at Barker Ranch, and one additional site that merits further investigation." From the AP: For years, rumors have swirled about other possible Manson family victims -- hitchhikers who visited t

Jump to the full entry & travel map Fresco, California, United States Ok since I last wrote we have done so much. After leaving New York we flew to Las Vegas and stayed in the luxor hotel - what a cool hotel. It's in the shape of a pyramid and we had a great room on the 18th floor. Vegas is wild, everything is huge and to walk anywhere is impossible. We decided it would not be a real trip to Vegas if you didn't take a punt, so both Dec and I played Blackjack. To be honest I was not going

Find Ethel & Colin in the California Deserts

Trip taken October, 2007 Did you know there are more deserts in the State of California than anywhere else in the world? Not the largest, but the most. We just returned from traveling through two of them -- the Mojave and the Colorado. Along the way we saw amazing formations of sand, stone, minerals, and plant life. Overall, our journey reminded us that water is the stuff of life which is especially noticeable when spending so much time traveling in and through the California desert region

Discovery of Possible Graves at Manson Site Superdelegate Status Now in Doubt

Hasn't been a good couple of days for 1960's flashbacks. In the midst of a racially divisive Democrat campaign, we have Barack Obama blaming the 1960s for the insane comments of Jeremiah Wright, promises of a 1968 reprisal in Denver and now we find out that there may well be more bodies unearthed that were murdered by counterculture icon Charles Manson and his band of zany followers. Three of them are those of my crew, my wife Gabi and my parents, the other two belong to John Vonhof and his assistant Jamie Mieras.
